چکیده

Introduction ‘Awake’ extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is being used increasingly as a bridge to lung transplant (LuTx) to support refractory respiratory failure as an alternative to invasive mechanical ventilation and associated immobilisation and deconditioning which are associated with poor outcome. The ideal combination of ECMO cannulation and muscle training has yet to be determined and depends largely on patient-specific needs and procedural limitations.

A step up for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: active rehabilitation.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been used in an increasing number of centers as a bridge to lung transplant.1-4 It is recognized that as the lungs fail, invasive mechanical ventilation may not fulfill the optimal goals as a bridge to transplant. There have now been several international reports of ECMO as a successful bridge to transplant in patients who are awake and non-ventila...

Ambulatory ECMO as a bridge to lung transplant in a previously well pediatric patient with ARDS.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is increasingly implemented in patients with end-stage pulmonary disease as a bridge to lung transplant. Several centers have instituted an approach that involves physical rehabilitation and ambulation for patients supported with ECMO. Recent reports describe the successful use of ambulatory ECMO in patients with chronic respiratory illnesses being bri...

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation as a bridge to lung transplantation and recovery.

OBJECTIVE Respiratory failure develops in many patients on lung transplant waiting lists before a suitable donor organ becomes available. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation may be used to bridge such patients to recovery or lung transplantation. METHODS This is a review of a single-institution's experience with placing patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation with the intention of bri...

Outcome of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation as a Bridge To Lung Transplantation: An Institutional Experience and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) as a bridge to lung transplantation (LuTx) is a promising option for patients with end-stage lung disease on the transplant waiting list. We investigated the outcome of patients bridged to lung transplantation on ECLS technologies, mainly extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). METHODS Between January 2007 and October 2013, ECLS was implanted ...

Successful Lung Transplant After Prolonged Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) in a Child With Pulmonary Hypertension: A Case Report

INTRODUCTION The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is considered a risk factor for, or even a potential contraindication to, lung transplantation. However, only a few pediatric cases have been described thus far. CASE PRESENTATION A 9-year-old boy with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension developed cardiac arrest after the insertion of a central catheter. ECMO was used a...
